Uzbekistan has urged CIS countries to harmonize national migration laws and enhance mechanisms for protecting the rights and freedoms of migrants, Uzbekistan’s Ombudsman, Feruza Eshmatova, said during a meeting of the CIS Human Rights Committee in St. Petersburg.
"The issues of improving national legal frameworks in the field of migration and protecting the rights of migrants are pertinent across the Commonwealth, especially as migration processes intensify. Our countries face several challenges, necessitating the harmonization of legislations and enhancement of mechanisms to protect the rights and freedoms of migrants, as well as improving their social integration," Eshmatova stated.
She emphasized the importance of developing unified regulatory approaches that balance national interests with international human rights obligations of the CIS member states. Eshmatova believes that establishing a common approach within the CIS to define and classify the rights and responsibilities of migrants, in accordance with international law standards, could help resolve many longstanding migration issues within the Commonwealth.
"Cooperation among CIS member states on migration issues will not only address current problems but also foster good neighborly relations between our countries and strengthen regional stability and security," Eshmatova concluded.
