Uzbekistan urges OTS partners to help bring peace to Afghanistan

11 November 2022

The countries of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) should contribute to peace and economic reconstruction of Afghanistan, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said on Friday.

"In our opinion, the countries of the Organization of Turkic States should help establish lasting peace and economic rehabilitation of Afghanistan, in this regard, I propose to instruct the foreign ministries of our countries to intensify diplomatic efforts in this direction," the Uzbek leader said in his speech at the first summit of the OTS, held in Samarkand. We can't leave Afghanistan and its people without help, he said, because isolating Afghanistan will only lead to radicalization inside the country, which will have a negative effect on all of Central Asia.

The Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States (Turkic Council), established in 2009, decided at a summit in Istanbul in November 2021 to change its name to the Organization of Turkic States. Currently, the organization includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan, with Hungary and Turkmenistan as observers.
