Valdai Conference to Bring Together Over 40 International Experts

09 December

The conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club will open on December 9 at the Moscow venue of the think tank. More than 40 experts from India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Russia are expected to take part.

The theme of the conference—“Security in Eurasia: From Concept to Practice”—references Russia’s initiative to develop a unified architecture of Eurasian security. According to the organizers, this concept has advanced both in expert circles and at the official level, having been discussed at bilateral summits with leaders of India and China and included in joint statements within the CIS and the Union State of Russia and Belarus.

Its core principles are laid out in the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century, which several countries have already joined. The document emphasizes adherence to international law, respect for global diversity, commitment to multipolarity, the restoration of the UN’s central role, and the strengthening and consolidation of the Eurasian space.

The conference aims to present an expert vision of what Eurasia’s security architecture could look like — one that may help shape future official discussions. “Valdai has traditionally offered experts from around the world a platform for frank and open exchange,” the organizers note. “Participants will discuss what a new security system should entail, what principles and goals it might include, and how concepts of regional security held by potential participants relate to one another.”

A new report, “Eurasian Security Architecture: Origins, Core Principles, and Prospects for Evolution,” has been prepared specifically for the event. It will be presented at the opening session of the conference. The report’s author is Ivan Timofeev, Program Director of the Valdai Discussion Club.
