At the G20 high-level virtual meeting on Afghanistan on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian side stressed the importance of effective response of the international community to challenges posed by the situation in Afghanistan, especially in terms of curbing security threats. Moscow was represented by Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin, the Russian MFA said in a statement released the day before following the meeting.
"The participants noted the importance of coordinating the international community's approaches to resolving the situation in Afghanistan and solving urgent problems. The need for immediate humanitarian aid to the country's population and unimpeded access to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe, among other things, was stressed," the document said. - "Vershinin emphasized the critical importance of an effective response to the challenges in Afghanistan, including curbing terrorist and drug threats, as well as international assistance for the reconstruction of the country and the timely transfer of funds. [He] noted the particular importance of national reconciliation efforts with the assistance of the expanded troika on Afghanistan, as well as the Moscow format.
The Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) launched a large-scale operation to take control of Afghanistan after the US announced this spring that it had decided to withdraw its armed forces from the country. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without any fighting, and president Ashraf Ghani left the country. On 6 September, the Taliban declared that they had taken control of the entire territory of Afghanistan and announced the composition of the provisional government on 7 September.
