The Sudanese authorities announced that 62 policemen were wounded during the January 30 mass protests in the country. This was reported by the SUNA news agency on Monday.
Law enforcers also reported the detention of 56 protesters. In addition, police confirmed that seven protesters were injured and one person died, as previously reported in a statement by Sudan's Central medical committee posted on Facebook on Sunday.
On Sunday, several thousand people took to the streets of Khartoum and other cities across the country for a "march of millions" demanding civilian rule. Some of the protesters headed toward the presidential palace in the Sudanese capital. Local police used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
For three months now, Sudan has been in turmoil over the decision of the army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to declare a state of emergency and dissolve the government and the governing Sovereign Council he heads. Despite his promises to "protect the transition period" and organize elections in mid-2023, protesters demand the immediate removal of the army from governing the country. Mediation efforts have not bridged the divide between Sudan's political parties. In the midst of the crisis, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned.
