Zakharova called the media reports about Russia blocking the work of the UN mission in Libya fake

16 September 2021

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the media reports that Russia is allegedly blocking the work of the UN support mission in Libya news fake.

"On September 15, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a technical extension of the mandate of the UN support mission in Libya until September 30," she said at a briefing on Thursday. - "In this regard, attention was drawn to reports that appeared in some media about Russia allegedly blocking the work of the support mission in Libya. Western countries, whose unconstructive position prevented UN Security Council members from deciding on the parameters of the mission's long-term operation, are behind this information fake.

Zakharova noted that Russia always emphasizes the important role of the UN and specifically this mission in advancing the Libyan settlement. "The resolution adopted aims to provide an opportunity for all parties to come to a common denominator regarding the work of the mission in the upcoming difficult stage of the political process in that country. We hope that this is the common goal of all UN Security Council members," the diplomat pointed out.

According to the official representative, the Russian Federation "will continue to provide all possible assistance to the friendly people of Libya to overcome the acute internal political crisis, the causes of which are directly linked to the destruction of Libyan statehood as a result of the NATO aggression in 2011".
