Russia expects to cooperate closely with the new Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Ján Kubiš. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said this at a briefing on Thursday.

She expressed confidence that Kubiš's extensive diplomatic experience will make a significant contribution to advancing the Libyan settlement and establishing a sustainable political process involving all influential forces in the country. "The UN has a special role to play here as an honest and impartial mediator committed to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya. We look forward to working closely with Mr. Kubiš to facilitate the success of his challenging yet noble mission," Zakharova said.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Slovak diplomat Ján Kubiš as the new Special Envoy to Libya after the Security Council approved his nomination.
