Moscow is deeply concerned about the growing military and political tensions in Yemen’s southern provinces of Hadhramaut and Mahra, and is calling on all parties involved to show restraint and seek mutually acceptable solutions, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on the recent escalation.
“In Moscow, we are concerned about the escalation of the military‑political situation in Yemen’s southern provinces of Hadhramaut and Mahra, which has resulted from clashes among various units of pro‑government forces, including those affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council,” Zakharova stressed.
“We urge all sides involved to exercise restraint and to seek compromise, mutually acceptable solutions to existing problems and contradictions through constructive intra‑Yemeni dialogue,” she added.
Zakharova welcomed the joint efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, outlined in Riyadh’s December 25 statement, aimed at easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in southern Yemen — including the deployment of a joint military team to Aden to assist local forces in addressing the aftermath of the crisis.
“We again emphasize the need for UN Secretary‑General Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg to intensify efforts toward lasting stabilization on the Arabian Peninsula and to help launch an inclusive intra‑Yemeni dialogue in pursuit of a comprehensive political settlement,” Zakharova said.
She reaffirmed that Russia remains ready to work constructively toward these goals “together with Yemen’s legitimate authorities, all key political forces of this friendly nation, and Russia’s regional partners — above all, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.”
