The Kyrgyz side is serious about resolving the issues related to the disputed areas on the common border with Tajikistan. President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov said this at the people's kurultai (congress) on Friday.
"We have seriously begun to solve the issue of the border with Tajikistan," he said.
According to Zhaparov, official Bishkek is taking all necessary measures to resolve this problem.
The president reminded that disputed territories on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border leads to "clashes and losses" among servicemen and the population of border regions.
Zhaparov also reminded that at present the republic has completed the process of demarcation and delimitation of the state border with all neighboring countries - Uzbekistan, China and Kazakhstan. The only exception to this list is Tajikistan.
The length of the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border is almost 980 km, after the collapse of the Soviet Union there were dozens of disputed areas on it. At present, according to various estimates, about 700-800 km of the border are in the process of delimitation and demarcation. Because of the disputed areas on the border between the two republics, conflicts between the military and the local population periodically occur, including with the use of weapons. The most recent clash occurred in early fall of this year, with over 60 people from the Kyrgyz side killed in the armed conflict at the time.
