Syria is keen to maintain Russia's support within the United Nations Security Council, stated Ahmed al-Sharaa, President of the Arab Republic's transitional government, in an interview with The Washington Post.
“We need Russia as it is a permanent member of the Security Council. We require its support on certain issues where we hope it will vote in our favor,” he remarked, expressing confidence that Syria and Russia share “strategic interests.” Al-Sharaa added, “We do not wish to push Russia toward alternative or different approaches in its engagement with Syria.”
“The issue of Bashar al-Assad presents complications for Russia and for our newly established relations with them. We reserve the right, as Syrians, to continue calling for Assad to be held accountable,” al-Sharaa also asserted.
In October, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists from Arab countries that Assad and his family are in Russia solely for humanitarian reasons, as the former president faced physical threats in his homeland.
