Algeria is in favor of introducing mechanisms that will enable the UN to monitor the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2728, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan. This stance was conveyed by Algeria's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf.
"Beginning Wednesday (March 27), meetings will be held to propose ways and mechanisms to enable the UN to follow up on what was decided by the Security Council and, in particular, to ensure that the Israeli occupier respects the obligations imposed on it and complies with the measures and decisions taken by the international community," Attaf stated, as quoted by Algerian radio.
"The next steps will focus mainly on monitoring the implementation of this resolution and efforts to immediately end the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip, as well as ensuring the unconditional and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people," Attaf continued.
He hailed the adoption of the resolution as a success, describing it as "the first UN Security Council resolution with clear and precise content, namely in favor of an immediate, durable, and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip."
On March 25, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution drafted by a dozen of its non-permanent members, including Algeria, demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during the month of Ramadan. Fourteen UNSC countries voted in favor of the resolution, including Britain, China, Russia, and France. Only the United States abstained.
