Algeria Condemns Israeli Military’s Violation of Syrian Sovereignty

12 December

The Algerian government has strongly condemned the Israeli military's violation of Syria's sovereignty and its aggression against Syrian territories, following Israel's occupation of the buffer zone on the Golan Heights. This stance was expressed in a statement issued by Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Algeria expresses firm condemnation of the Zionist entity’s [Israel's] violation of Syria's sovereignty and aggression against its territories after seizing the buffer zone on the occupied Golan Heights, as well as its declaration to annul the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria,” the statement read.

Algerian authorities accused Israel of exploiting “the current circumstances in Syria and regional instability to impose a new order aligned with the expansionist and colonial policies of the Zionist occupation authorities.”

On December 8, the Israeli military announced it had taken positions in the buffer zone on the Golan Heights, which since 1974 had separated areas under Israeli and Syrian control. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as a temporary defensive measure aimed at countering potential threats along the Syrian front. Concurrently, reports of Israeli airstrikes in Syria began to surface, though the Israeli military has yet to comment on these allegations.

The developments come amid significant upheaval in Syria. On November 27, opposition armed groups launched a major offensive against government forces in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. By December 7, opposition forces had captured key cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Deraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered Damascus, prompting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to relinquish his post and leave the country following intra-Syrian negotiations.
