Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed in Ankara on Monday his desire to increase Turkish investments in the North African country to more than $10 billion, the Algeria Press Service news agency reported.
Tebboune held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which the sides discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields. According to the Algerian leader, "meaningful and in-depth discussions took place, which consolidated the achievements made during President Erdogan's visit to Algeria in 2020, when many cooperation agreements were concluded."
"One of the most important decisions made by President Erdogan then was to increase Turkish investment in Algeria to almost $5 billion, and this has been achieved," Tebboune continued. - "We agreed to bring Turkish investment in Algeria to more than $10 billion". "The important milestones passed by the two countries together enrich our privileged historical relations and strengthen the process of strategic partnership," the Algerian leader said.
Election issue
Algeria and Turkey share the same views on resolving the crisis in Libya by organizing fair elections that will return power to the people, he said.
"Algeria has a fundamental convergence of views with its brothers in Turkey on the need to give the Libyan people a voice to decide their fate through elections," Tebboune stressed.
"Resolving the crisis in Libya requires organizing fair elections that return power to the Libyan people," he continued. Algeria and Turkey can contribute to Libyan elections, he said. Tebboune also reported that "Algeria and Turkey have agreed to continue consultations and coordination on Libya."
Parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya were to be held on December 24, 2021, but at the last moment they were postponed indefinitely because of the impossibility of organizing them and the shortcomings of the law.
Earlier Monday, Tebboune and Erdogan signed a joint declaration of the first meeting of the high-level Cooperation Council. The two countries also signed several cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding in various fields such as energy and mining, finance, trade, industry, information and communication, public works, fisheries, science, technology and innovation, vocational training, culture, education, the environment and the fight against cross-border organized crime.
Tebboune has been in Turkey since Sunday on a three-day state visit.
