Ambassador to Russia: Iran is ready for further joint vaccine production

21 March 2022

Iran welcomes the development of cooperation with Russia in the production of coronavirus vaccines Sputnik V and Sputnik Light, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali said in an interview with TASS.

"Due to Russia's serious approach to joint vaccine production in other countries, a joint cooperation agreement was signed between Iran's Pasteur Institute and the Gamaleya Center for technology transfer for joint production of the Sputnik V vaccine in Iran, and the Iranian company Actoverco with the Gamaleya Center and the Russian Direct Investment Fund for joint production of the Sputnik Light vaccine in Iran. We welcome the development of collaboration to pursue other vaccine and immunobiological opportunities. Currently, the country's need for vaccines is met by domestic production," he said.

The ambassador recalled that Iran and Russia initially agreed on a contract to purchase 2 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine, followed by a contract to purchase 30 million doses. "To date, about 5 million doses of the vaccine have been purchased in this country," he added.

A test batch of the Sputnik V vaccine was produced in Iran back in June 2021.

Sputnik V was registered in Russia on August 11, 2020, and was the first officially registered coronavirus vaccine in the world. So far, the vaccine has been registered in 70 countries with a total population of 4 billion people.
