An international meeting on Syria in the Astana format will be held in Nur-Sultan in mid-December, deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tleuberdi told reporters on Thursday.

"We received an appeal from the guarantor countries asking to organize the next negotiations of the Astana process. We still coordinate the exact dates, somewhere in the middle of December," Tleuberdi said.

He noted that the participants of the meeting will be the guarantor countries of the Astana process (Russia, Turkey and Iran), the Syrian parties and invited observers. "We are now figuring out [the level of negotiations], usually it was the case that the guarantor countries were represented at the level of deputy ministers," Tleuberdi explained.

The 16th international high-level meeting on Syria was held July 7-8 in Nur-Sultan with delegations from the guarantor countries, the Syrian government and the armed opposition. The participants discussed the situation in the Arab republic, international humanitarian assistance, prospects for resuming the work of the Syrian Constitutional committee in Geneva, as well as confidence-building measures, including prisoner exchange, hostage release and search for missing persons.
