Turkmenistan’s President, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, has awarded his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, a commemorative medal marking the 300th anniversary of the Turkmen poet and classical figure, Magtymguly Pyragy. Berdimuhamedov highlighted the extensive celebrations of the poet’s anniversary in Russia.
“Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my gratitude for the support and assistance in this work. Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich, I have decided to award you the commemorative medal of Magtymguly Pyragy. This will become yet another vivid symbol of the strong ties between our peoples and nations. Congratulations,” Berdimuhamedov announced during the forum titled “The Connection of Times and Civilizations – the Foundation of Peace and Development”.
The international forum, dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great Turkmen poet and philosopher Magtymguly Pyragy, is being held in Ashgabat this Friday. It has attracted the participation of the presidents of Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, while Turkey is represented at the parliamentary level.
Magtymguly Pyragy is regarded as the founder of the literary Turkmen language. Born in 1724, he elevated the role of colloquial language in poetry and broke with the traditional Arab-Persian poetic meter in favor of a syllabic system. His poems were passed down orally by musicians and storytellers until they were published in the early 19th century.
The International Organization of Turkic Culture has declared 2024 the Year of Pyragy, and his anniversary has been included in the list of important dates to be celebrated jointly with UNESCO in 2024–2025.
