The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) considers the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine urgent but recognizes it as a complex challenge, CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev said ahead of a meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of member states.
“I have no doubt it can be resolved. Of course, I’m following the negotiations closely,” Lebedev said.
He stressed that war contradicts human nature, and peace is the normal state. “We sincerely hope that all parties return to peace between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible,” he added.
Lebedev condemned the deaths of thousands on both sides as unnatural and said ending the conflict is essential. He acknowledged the difficulty and said experts agree a swift solution is unlikely, but progress is underway.
He highlighted the efforts of CIS leaders—including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko—and others supporting peaceful settlement initiatives.
“I truly hope and believe we will achieve this goal, and the sooner, the better,” Lebedev concluded.
