At least 16 members of Syria's security forces have been killed in clashes with armed groups in Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, a suburb southwest of Damascus. The information was confirmed by a security official speaking to Al-Ikhbariya TV.
According to the official, armed militants blocked several roads in the area, prompting military and security units to launch an operation aimed at protecting civilians and neutralizing the groups before they could inflict further harm on the population or public infrastructure.
The broadcaster reported that significant reinforcements have been deployed to the town to pursue the attackers, and a curfew has been imposed as part of the security response.
Meanwhile, Syria TV noted that major highways linking Damascus to the provinces of Daraa and al-Suwayda have been closed. Armed groups based in Ashrafiyat Sahnaya have reportedly launched attacks on civilians in the area, with numerous casualties reported in recent hours, though exact figures were not disclosed.
The unrest began early Wednesday when fighters in the Druze-majority suburb initiated a series of raids. The first assault targeted a security checkpoint, leaving three officers injured. Later, the militants ambushed a vehicle traveling from Daraa, killing six people.
