CNN: Israel Preparing Possible Strike on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

21 May

Israel is actively preparing for a potential military strike on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, despite ongoing indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington. This was reported by CNN, citing sources within the US government.

According to one US official, the likelihood of an Israeli strike has increased significantly in recent months, especially amid reports that any potential US-Iran agreement would not require Tehran to fully relinquish its enriched uranium stockpiles. “That alone increases the chances of an Israeli decision to act,” the official said.

While it remains unclear whether Israel has made a final decision to carry out an attack, US intelligence has observed indicators that suggest preparations may be underway. These include the movement of Israeli Air Force equipment and intensified military exercises. However, analysts caution that such moves could also serve as a show of force aimed at pressuring Iran to make concessions on its nuclear program.

Meanwhile, the United States and Iran have held four rounds of back-channel talks in recent weeks, with Oman acting as a mediator. The first session took place on April 12 in Muscat, followed by meetings in Rome on April 19 and again in Muscat on April 26 and May 11. Iran's delegation has been led by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US is represented by US Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff.

A fifth round of talks is reportedly being planned for May 24–25 in Rome, as diplomatic efforts to revive dialogue continue.
