Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed confidence in his victory in next year's Turkish presidential elections, noting that "there is no alternative."
"We are not worried about winning elections. No one will replace us, because there is no alternative," he said in an interview with the US PBS. A transcript of the interview, translated into English, is available Monday on the PBS website.
In August, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said the country's presidential election will be held on June 18, 2023. General (presidential and parliamentary) elections in Turkey, according to the local legislation, are held on the same day. The ruling People's Alliance had previously announced that incumbent President Erdogan would be their common candidate. The opposition, represented by a bloc of six parties, has not yet named its candidate.
The opposition had previously stated that the incumbent Turkish president could not run in the election because it would be his third term. The head of the Ministry of Justice has repeatedly said that the upcoming presidential election will be Erdogan's second since Turkey switched from a parliamentary to a presidential form of government in 2018.
