Erdogan thinks it's time to reform UN system

11 March 2022

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his opinion Friday that now is the time to reform the UN system.

"The system, which determines the fate of the 193 UN member states by five countries, is unfair. The system must be reformed again. When we say the world is more than five countries, we are trying to protect the rights and common interests of all mankind, not doing it out of the interests of our own country," the Turkish president argues.

This is not the first time the president of the republic has criticized the UN. He has stated this need almost every year at the UN General Assemblies. In October 2021, Erdogan, speaking before the Angolan Parliament during a visit to the country, said that the fate of humanity should not be left to a "handful of countries" who won World War II. Referring to the inequalities that persist in the global system, he stressed that "the world is bigger than five," referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council who joined as victors of the war.

Commenting on Erdogan's statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: "President Erdogan's eloquence is well known; he speaks freely on various topics. I agree with him that the UN Security Council's permanent five members have no right to dictate the fate of the world. It has no right to dictate the fate of the world, but only to exercise those powers as specified in the UN Charter. The Charter reflects the collective will of all members of the world community and the "Five" has a special responsibility for the state of affairs in the world, especially for the avoidance of global conflict".
