The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has raised alarm over the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, particularly in its northern region, warning of the urgent need to prevent famine. AbdulHakim Elwaer, FAO Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa, conveyed this message during a briefing in Geneva.
"Immediate action is needed to avert famine in the Gaza Strip and address the severe food shortages afflicting the population," - stated Elwaer. - "Restoring unimpeded humanitarian access is crucial to prevent further deterioration of the situation."
Elwaer underscored the obstacles posed by the ban on imports of essential agricultural commodities from Israel, which has hindered relief efforts. FAO has been compelled to rely on supplies from Egypt via the Rafah crossing. However, delays and logistical challenges have impeded the timely delivery of aid to those in need.
"The alarming conditions in Gaza, particularly in its northern region, have heightened concerns about the imminent risk of famine and widespread food insecurity, underscoring the urgency of the situation," remarked the FAO official.
Elwaer urged UN agencies to mobilize additional resources and support from FAO and other humanitarian organizations to alleviate the suffering of the population and prevent further loss of life.
