27 January 2022

Russia expresses concern over the situation in Burkina Faso and calls for the immediate release of the president of that country, Aleksei Zaitsev, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department, said at a briefing on Thursday.

"We express our concern over the aforementioned events in friendly Burkina Faso. We proceed from our principled position that unconstitutional actions to change the government are unacceptable, and we call for the immediate release of President Roch Kabore, as well as the country's early return to civilian rule," he said.

On January 23, the military revolted at a number of army bases in various parts of Burkina Faso and within a day seized power, which is now in the hands of the "Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Reconstruction" they created. It is led by Sandaogo Damiba. The military announced the ouster of the president, the suspension of the constitution, the dissolution of the government and parliament, and the closure of the country's land and air borders. Burkina Faso imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The military also said it would soon present a timetable for returning the country to constitutional order.
