Former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Dies at 85

14 April

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who served as Malaysia’s fifth prime minister from 2003 to 2009, has passed away at the age of 85. The news was confirmed by his son-in-law, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who announced that Badawi died at 7:10 p.m. local time at the National Heart Institute.

Born on November 26, 1939, Badawi held several key ministerial roles over the years, including in education, defense, foreign affairs, and internal security. His time as prime minister was marked by a shift toward greater political openness and civil liberties, offering a contrast to the more authoritarian rule of his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad.
