Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a meeting today to discuss the upcoming nuclear program negotiations between the United States and Iran, scheduled for February 17, in Geneva, with Oman acting as the mediator.
"I have just concluded an in-depth discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi regarding technical issues in preparation for the important negotiations scheduled for tomorrow in Geneva," Grossi shared in a post on X.
In June 2025, Israel launched a military operation against Iran, which was met with a retaliatory strike by the Republic. The United States entered the conflict on June 22, striking Iranian nuclear sites in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow. In response, Iran targeted the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest American air facility in the Middle East. Following these escalations, the White House announced that both Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire, which took effect on June 24, 2025.
In the months following the June conflict, Iran suspended all cooperation with the IAEA, citing the agency's failure to condemn the strikes by the US and Israel. Interaction only resumed on September 9, 2024, after a new agreement was reached in Cairo. However, tensions resurfaced on November 20, when the IAEA passed a resolution demanding full access for inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites. In response, Tehran issued a formal notice terminating the Cairo agreement.
