Guterres: Gaza Ceasefire Holding Despite Violations

13 November

The ceasefire in Gaza remains fragile and has been violated by Israel several times, yet the truce between Israeli authorities and the Palestinian movement Hamas continues to hold, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated.

“The Gaza ceasefire is fragile and has been repeatedly violated by Israel, but it still holds,” he told a press conference at the UN. “I strongly appeal for the ceasefire to be fully upheld so we can pave the way for negotiations on a second phase leading to conditions for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution.”

On October 9, Israel and Hamas reached an agreement through mediation by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and Turkey to implement the first phase of a peace plan presented by US leader Donald Trump. The Gaza ceasefire under this plan took effect on October 10. Violations have been recorded since then, with Israel killing 241 Gazans since the truce began.

Following the escalation in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, the total Palestinians killed during Israeli military operations has reached 68,858, with over 170,000 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. International humanitarian organizations continue to report a catastrophic situation in the enclave.
