Intensity of fighting in Sudan tends to decrease - Russian ambassador

19 April 2023

The fighting in Sudan tends to become less intense and localized and no longer spreads over the entire capital, Russian Ambassador to Sudan Andrei Chernovol said to TASS on Wednesday.

"The intensity and localization of hostilities tends to decrease. The last two days have shown this: the day before yesterday it was a little quieter, yesterday it was even quieter, now it [the fighting] does not spread across Khartoum, it is mainly in certain spots that are shifting to the right and left, but it is no longer on such a large scale," the high-ranking diplomat said.

He said the possibility of evacuating the Russian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, is being considered, but the city's airport is not operating because of the fighting. "Such an aspect (evacuation - TASS) is always considered in hot spots. Another thing is that so far, unfortunately, one of the epicenters of the fighting is the area around the airport. That is why the airport is not working. It is not feasible to go somewhere from Khartoum, because it is not clear where one can go. That is why such options are being considered but they cannot be implemented," said the Russian ambassador.

According to Chernovol, the Russian Federation is working to relocate Russian citizens to the embassy building in Khartoum, but for now the movements are not safe. "We keep in touch with all our citizens, they are doing as well as they can for now," the ambassador continued. - "We're working on some way to get them from there to the embassy by agreement with the two sides." However, according to the diplomat, it is not feasible at the moment because it is more dangerous to transfer them in the city than to stay where they are.

The ambassador, responding to a question about the situation of a Russian citizen and her child who were trapped in a temple in Sudan, said: "It was decided not to relocate anyone anywhere for the time being." "Unfortunately, the Russian citizens are exactly near the epicenter of the clashes, and it is safer to stay there now than to move around the areas," Chernovolov explained.

Earlier, Chernovol said that there was no data on injured Russian citizens as a result of the clashes in Sudan, and all diplomatic mission staff and Russians were advised to stay at home.
