Iran affirms commitment to fulfill agreements with Azerbaijan

05 July 2023

Iran has expressed its readiness to fulfill all existing agreements with Azerbaijan, aiming to overcome past misunderstandings and strengthen bilateral relations. Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, made this announcement following discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Quoted by the Iranian agency Khabar Online, Abdollahian emphasized the formation of a positive atmosphere between the two countries and affirmed Iran's commitment to honoring their agreements.

Highlighting the "significant expansion of interaction between Iran and Azerbaijan in recent times", the Iranian foreign minister is currently in Baku, participating in the ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The relationship between Baku and Tehran had faced strains following an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran earlier this year. Tragically, the incident resulted in the death of the head of security of the diplomatic mission and injuries to two colleagues. Consequently, the Azerbaijani embassy suspended its diplomatic activities, and most of its staff and their families were evacuated to Azerbaijan. While five diplomats remained at the embassy to safeguard the administrative building and property, diplomatic activities were halted.

In early April, Azerbaijan declared four employees of the Iranian embassy in Baku persona non grata. In response, the Iranian side reciprocated by expelling four Azerbaijani diplomats.
