The man who attacked visitors to the mausoleum in Iran's Mashhad was under the influence of radical Islamism. The governor of Khorasan-Rezavi province, Yaqub Ali Nazari, said on Tuesday.
"The former attacker was influenced by radical Islamist ideology," ISNA quoted the governor as saying.
The politician added that "three clerics who were cultural and social activists were attacked."
Earlier Tuesday, an intruder carried out a knife attack at Iran's main pilgrimage site for Shiite Muslims, the Imam Reza mausoleum. Two people were wounded and one was killed. The attacker was apprehended immediately after the incident.
