Iran Signals Readiness for "Real Negotiations" with the US

29 January

Tehran is open to holding talks with the American administration, provided that the United States is truly prepared for a genuine dialogue toward reaching an agreement. This statement was made by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Majlis (the unicameral parliament).

"If these are real negotiations aimed at reaching a deal within the framework of international norms, then yes. But those are not the kind of talks the US President [Donald Trump] is seeking; he simply wants to impose his will on others," Ghalibaf stated in an interview with CNN.

"I believe that if Trump is truly honest and wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize, he should pursue real peace and, first and foremost, distance himself from the warmongers and those who seek Iran’s submission," the parliamentary speaker added. He further remarked that while Trump "can start a war" with Iran, he would not be able to control its conclusion. "Thousands of American soldiers being deployed [to the Middle East] thousands of miles from home will certainly be harmed. That is not a good thing," he concluded.

Previously, Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, stated that Tehran would view any aggressive action by the US as the start of a full-scale war, warning that a response would follow immediately.
