Iran Summons EU Ambassadors Following IRGC Terrorist Designation

02 February

In response to the European Union's decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassadors of all EU member states accredited in Tehran to lodge a formal protest. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei announced the move during a weekly briefing.

"The ambassadors of all European Union member states with embassies in Tehran were summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the protest of the Islamic Republic of Iran was delivered in writing. However, this is merely a minimum measure," Baghaei noted. He added that Tehran is currently weighing several other retaliatory actions against the EU, with a final decision expected in the coming days.

The diplomatic escalation follows an announcement on January 29 by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who stated on X that EU foreign ministers had "taken a decisive step by recognizing the IRGC as a terrorist organization." This move automatically triggered Article 7 of Iran's "Law on Reciprocal Measures." Consequently, the Iranian government now officially recognizes the armed forces of all EU member states as terrorist entities.
