Russian President's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Director of the Second Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Zamir Kabulov said that he would take part in the upcoming May 1 meeting of the special representatives for Afghanistan from various countries, to be held in Doha by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
"This proposal was made several weeks ago, and I will take part in this meeting in Doha," Kabulov told TASS on Tuesday, answering a related question.
The diplomat stressed that Russia will have an honest and frank conversation at the upcoming meeting. "There are no particular big [expectations], because what Guterres is trying to do is sort of combine the hard-to-match approaches of regional states and the collective West led by the United States. We'll see, at least we'll have a frank and honest conversation. Time will show what will come of it," he said.
Kabulov also said that he may have bilateral meetings in Doha. "Yes, there will be. There is already a request from some of my colleagues, so I am planning to hold them [meetings]," the diplomat said in response to a related question. - "First, with the head of UNAMA [the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan], the Turkish counterpart. Probably, there will be others, too."
Earlier, on April 19, former US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad said that the UN secretary-general would hold a meeting with special envoys for Afghanistan from different countries in the Qatari capital on May 1.
