Lavrov: diplomat's accreditation from Taliban does not mean recognition of Afghan government

26 April 2022

The accreditation of one diplomat sent to Moscow by the Taliban (banned in Russia) does not mean official diplomatic recognition of the government in Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday at a press conference following talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

"We did accredit one diplomat who has already been sent to Moscow to work in the embassy by the new authorities - the Taliban movement. This does not mean official diplomatic recognition," he said.

Lavrov said Russia wants to move toward full diplomatic recognition of the new authorities in Afghanistan, represented by the Taliban, provided a truly inclusive government is formed there.

"We want to move towards full diplomatic recognition of the new authorities in Afghanistan with the understanding that they will fulfill their promise and create an inclusive government not only from an ethnic and religious standpoint, because they now have Uzbeks, Tajiks, and Hazaras in the government, they are all Taliban politically, but it is political inclusiveness that should determine our next steps, especially since the Taliban have proclaimed this goal," the minister said.
