Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has discussed the situation and prospects of the political process in Syria with the head of the Syrian foreign ministry Faisal Mekdad on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
"An exchange of views on the development of the situation in and around Syria took place with a focus on the prospects for further advancement of the political process on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 2254, including the activities of the inter-Syrian Constitutional committee in Geneva," the diplomatic office said.
The Russian foreign ministry pointed out that Russia reaffirmed its principled position supporting unconditional respect for sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as the legal right of Syrians to independently determine the future of their country.
