Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov congratulated Amir Abdollahian on his confirmation as Iran's new foreign minister, the press service of the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday.
"Following the appointment of Abdollahian as Iran's foreign minister, Lavrov sent a congratulatory message to the new minister," the report said. It is also noted that "the Russian foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation between Iran and Russia."
On Wednesday, Abdollahian was approved by Iran's Majlis (parliament) as foreign minister after he was nominated by President Ebrahim Raisi. The new minister received 270 votes out of 286 deputies.
Prior to his appointment as foreign minister, Abdollahian served as advisor to the speaker of the Majlis on international affairs. In addition, he has experience in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as deputy minister. He held the post for the first three years after the appointment of Mohammad Javad Zarif as foreign minister.
