Lavrov: priority is to deepen ties between EEU, CSTO, CIS, SCO

12 July 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the priority of deepening the multidimensional ties of integration associations such as the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). In a video address to the forum of young diplomats of Eurasia, titled "Diplomacy of the New Multipolar World," Lavrov highlighted the ongoing work to realize Russian President Vladimir Putin's vision of a large Eurasian partnership.

Lavrov stated, "Within their frameworks, a constructive, forward-looking, interstate agenda is being promoted. Russia takes the most active part in the work of these structures. Now they have objectively brought to the forefront the task of deepening multidimensional ties between the various integration structures operating in the Greater Eurasia region. This is precisely what the initiative put forward by the president of the Russian Federation to build the Greater Eurasian partnership is aimed at. Work on the practical realization of this initiative, aimed at the formation of a continental zone of peace, security and practical cooperation, is already underway."

When discussing the global order, Lavrov noted, "Now we can observe the end of the indiscriminate dominance of the collective West. At the same time, new development centers in Eurasia, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America are simultaneously growing stronger and gaining momentum. Thus, the establishment of a more just, equilibrium, polycentric world order is a geopolitical reality that all participants in international communication must reckon with."

He emphasized the importance of classical diplomacy based on universally recognized, international legal norms. "It is difficult to overestimate the role of classical diplomacy based on universally recognized, international legal norms - first of all, on the principles of the UN Charter, respect for the cultural and civilizational diversity of the world, the right of peoples to choose their own models of development," Lavrov noted.

"Building up constructive, fruitful cooperation with friends, allies, and like-minded people in Eurasia is an unconditional priority for Russia. This is enshrined in the new version of the Concept of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation approved by President Putin at the end of March,"  Lavrov concluded.
