Moscow is grateful to Tehran for its balanced position on the situation around Ukraine and for its understanding of Russian security concerns, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a press conference following talks in Moscow with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
"We talked about the situation in and around Ukraine. We gave our Iranian interlocutors a detailed account of the current situation, how it is developing, and thanked them for their consistently balanced position on the matter," Lavrov said.
"Tehran understands Russia's security concerns, considers them absolutely legitimate, and understands the motives that caused our actions in response to the destabilizing policy of the United States and its NATO allies," the Russian foreign minister added.
Lavrov also said he had compared notes with his Iranian counterpart on other regional issues such as the Middle East, Afghanistan, Transcaucasia, Iraq, Yemen, and the Caspian Sea region.
