Western countries are trying to create an almost insurmountable confrontation between Russia and the North Atlantic Alliance, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said as he opened talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Moscow on Monday.
"The situation in the world is evolving rapidly, this includes northern Africa and the Middle East issues, including the Syrian settlement. To our great regret, our efforts with you, which are aimed at implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2254, are affected by the atmosphere that our Western colleagues are now stirring up, trying to create an almost insurmountable confrontation between Russia and the Western alliance," he said.
"We will certainly not allow such attempts to undermine our ability to achieve concrete results, to somehow negatively affect the development of the closest strategic relations between Russia and Syria and our efforts to achieve a just peace based on strengthening the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of your country," Lavrov stressed, referring to his counterpart.
The minister also noted that the presidents of the two countries define the tasks facing Moscow and Damascus, their regular contact in September 2021 confirmed this. "I am sure that today we can usefully discuss how to concretely promote these tasks and put them into practice," Lavrov summarized.
