Lebanese president requests Russian satellite photos from the day of Beirut port explosion

Lebanese president Michel Aoun officially requested satellite photos from Russia on the day of the August 2020 explosion in the port of Beirut. The presidential office announced this on its Twitter page on Friday.


"President Aoun formally asked the Russian ambassador to inform his country of Lebanon's desire for satellite images taken on the day of the Beirut port explosion," the statement noted.


On August 4, 2020, there was an explosion at the seaport of the Lebanese capital, which had a capacity of 1,500 tons in TNT equivalent. The explosion destroyed and damaged thousands of homes within the city and beyond, 219 people were killed, 6.5 thousand were injured, more than 300,000 citizens were left homeless. According to the Lebanese interior ministry, the explosion was caused by a fire during welding works of over 2.7 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate stored in the warehouse.
