On Tuesday, the House of Representatives (standing parliament) of Libya passed a vote of no-confidence on Prime Minister-elect Fathi Bashagha, Al Arabiya reported.
According to the channel, the parliament will initiate an investigation against the head of the government. MP Jibril Waheeda told the Libya Al Ahrar TV channel in a commentary that the House of Representatives met on Tuesday to discuss the "failures, abuses and failed promises" of the appointed head of government and to form a committee to investigate his misdeeds. According to the deputy, the parliament also plans to "appoint a substitute [for the prime minister] until the situation becomes clearer."
Earlier it became known that Fathi Bashagha sent a letter to the House of Representatives, according to the text of which he transfers the powers to his deputy Ali al-Qatrani.
There are now effectively two governments in Libya: a cabinet in the east, headed by Fathi Bashagha, who is supported by the parliament, and the Government of National Unity led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, headquartered in Tripoli. On June 22 last year, the transition period set by the UN as a result of the Geneva accords expired, by the end of which Libya should have an elected president and parliament. The elections scheduled for December 2021 were cancelled due to the lack of the necessary constitutional basis, and no date has yet been officially set.
