The upcoming 47th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), set for October, is expected to be the largest and most dynamic in the bloc’s history, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced.
“This October’s ASEAN summit will likely be the most dynamic yet, with participation not only from ASEAN member states and its traditional partners — Japan, South Korea, and China — but also from many others,” Anwar said, as quoted by the Bernama news agency.
The summit will take place in Kuala Lumpur from October 26–28. According to Anwar, several high-profile global leaders have already confirmed attendance, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. He called the scale of international participation “an ambitious undertaking.”
ASEAN was founded in 1967 and currently comprises 10 Southeast Asian nations: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Malaysia assumed the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN for a one-year term in 2025.
