The fifth round of negotiations between Iran and the United States on resolving disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program has begun in the Italian capital, according to ISNA news agency.
According to the report, the Iranian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US delegation is headed by Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff. The American team also includes State Department Director of Policy Planning Michael Anton. Iran’s delegation includes Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi, as well as Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.
The consultations are being held at the residence of the Omani ambassador, with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi acting as mediator.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that its primary goal in the upcoming negotiations is to clarify the US position, which, according to Iranian diplomats, has been inconsistent. Initially, Washington had accepted a maximum uranium enrichment level of 3.67%—as stipulated in the 2015 nuclear deal. However, after the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018, Iran increased enrichment levels to 60%. The US is now reportedly demanding that Iran halt enrichment altogether—an offer Tehran has rejected, arguing it would effectively dismantle a nuclear program used for industrial and medical purposes.
The first round of Iran–US talks took place on April 12 in Muscat, the second on April 19 in Rome, and the third and fourth rounds were held on April 26 and May 11 again in the Omani capital.
