Media: King of Morocco will not attend the Arab League summit in Algeria

31 October 2022

King Mohammed VI of Morocco will not attend the 31st summit of the Arab League (LAS) in Algeria, which begins on Tuesday, November 1. This was reported on Monday by the website of the weekly Jeune Afrique.

According to its data, the Moroccan delegation, which was responsible for preparing the monarch's visit, left Algeria on Monday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and for Moroccans Expatriates Nasser Bourita will represent the kingdom at the summit.

Mohammed VI received an invitation at the end of September from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to attend the summit. Several media outlets wrote about the monarch's intention to travel to Algeria with his son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan.

Algeria and Morocco have had very difficult relations in the past few decades. Observers say the main stumbling block is the issue of Western Sahara, on which the two neighboring countries have opposing positions. At the end of August 2021, Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco, accusing the kingdom of committing "continuous hostile acts.

The 31st Arab League summit in the Algerian capital is scheduled for November 1-2. The last time Algeria hosted the Arab summit was in 2005. During the meeting, leaders are expected to consider a number of important issues for the region, including the Palestinian dossier, the Libyan and Syrian crises, and the theme of inter-Arab relations.
