Media: PA Official Expected to Lead New Technocratic Gaza Administration

14 January

A representative of the Palestinian Authority (PA) — Ali Shaath, a former deputy minister of planning — is expected to head a new Palestinian technocratic government for Gaza, which is envisioned for the second phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Reuters reported, citing sources.

The new technocratic body is expected to have 14 members. Reuters said the proposed structure for the transitional administration has been preliminarily agreed by all relevant parties, and it would not include representatives of the Palestinian movement Hamas.

On Wednesday, Shaath and other candidates for the transitional administration are expected to meet in Cairo with Nickolay Mladenov, the former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, who is expected to serve as the representative of Trump’s proposed “Peace Council” in Gaza. Reuters added that Trump is expected to announce the formation of the Palestinian technocratic body after that meeting.

On January 7, Axios reported that President Donald Trump could announce the creation of a “Peace Council” in the second week of January. According to the report, the body — to be chaired by Trump himself — would include “around 15 world leaders.” The council would oversee the still-to-be-formed Palestinian technocratic government, as well as the Gaza reconstruction process.
