Media Report: US Military-Industrial Complex Could Benefit from Israel-Palestine Conflict

12 October 2023

The Chinese newspaper Global Times expressed the opinion in an editorial that the US military-industrial complex could benefit from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through arms transfers.

"The US military-industrial complex has a chance for capitalizing on conflicts and profiting from violence. Whenever there's a military dispute or even regional tensions anywhere in the world, the US can invariably turn it into a lucrative opportunity for American arms dealers to amass wealth," the article stated.

The article highlighted the surge in the stock prices of American defense contractors, such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, which saw significant increases after the Middle East conflict escalated. The publication pointed out that the United States, not just in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but in any other conflict, tends to respond with an escalation of violence rather than promoting peace. The Global Times piece stated, "The US is among the few who can exploit conflicts for substantial profits." Consequently, following the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Lockheed Martin's shares surged by 8%, and Northrop Grumman's shares increased by 11%.

The newspaper also emphasized that US defense giants, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman, not only sold significant quantities of military equipment to Ukraine but also leveraged this opportunity to market their products to other European nations. These companies also secured more contracts and funding from the US government. Furthermore, the Global Times noted that the United States continues to contribute to tensions in the Taiwan Strait by selling weapons to the Taiwanese administration.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated during a visit to Brussels on October 11 that the US administration "can and will" provide military assistance to both Israel and Ukraine.
