Media: Russia Delivers Cash in Syrian Pounds to Damascus Airport

14 February

Russia has delivered an unspecified amount of cash in Syrian pounds to Damascus International Airport, according to a statement from the Central Bank of Syria published by the state news agency SANA.

“We confirm that cash in Syrian pounds was transported from Russia to Syria via Damascus International Airport. However, the circulated reports about the amount of money are entirely inaccurate. We emphasize the need to rely on official information,” the statement read.

Following a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syria’s transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa, social media users shared an alleged document suggesting that Russia had promised to deliver tons of Syrian currency, reportedly printed at "Gosznak" facilities. The authenticity of the document has not been verified.

On February 12, Putin and al-Sharaa held their first high-level phone call since the transition of power in Syria. According to the Kremlin, Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to supporting the improvement of Syria's socio-economic situation, including humanitarian aid for the Syrian people.

The Syrian side indicated that the presidents also discussed the possibility of revising agreements made between Russia and Syria under the previous government of Bashar al-Assad.
