Military Tribunal in Pakistan Sentences 60 Opposition Supporters

26 December 2024

A military tribunal in Pakistan has sentenced 60 supporters of the opposition "Movement for Justice" (PTI) to prison terms ranging from two to ten years for their involvement in attacks on defense installations during the anti-government protests on May 9, 2023.

"The nation, government, and armed forces remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and preserving the integrity of state institutions," the military judges stated, as quoted by Reuters.

Among those convicted are a nephew of the imprisoned former Prime Minister and PTI leader Imran Khan, as well as two retired military personnel. Last week, the tribunal sentenced an additional 25 PTI activists on similar charges.

The protests erupted following Khan's arrest in Islamabad on corruption charges related to alleged misuse of a foundation owned by him and his wife for money laundering. According to police, the demonstrations were marked by acts of vandalism, attacks on military facilities, and violent clashes with law enforcement. The unrest led to the deaths of approximately 50 people, injuries to at least 120 others, and the arrest of more than 1,200 protesters nationwide.
