Mishustin to Hold Talks with Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister

21 April

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is set to meet with his Kazakh counterpart, Olzhas Bektenov, for bilateral talks focused on strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The discussions will cover key areas of Russia-Kazakhstan trade and economic collaboration. “Special attention will be given to joint projects in industry, energy—including peaceful nuclear energy—space, transport infrastructure, and the digital economy,” Russia’s Cabinet press service said in a statement.

According to the Russian side, in 2024, Russia became Kazakhstan’s top supplier of goods and its largest foreign investor, accounting for a quarter of total foreign capital inflows. More than 30 investment projects with Russian participation are currently underway in Kazakhstan, covering sectors such as automotive manufacturing, agricultural machinery, railway engineering, nuclear energy, and chemicals.

Space cooperation remains a strategic pillar of the partnership. “A major focus is the joint use of the Baikonur Cosmodrome,” the Cabinet noted. Among priority initiatives is the development of the Baiterek space rocket complex for launching next-generation carrier rockets. The 70th anniversary of Baikonur will be celebrated on June 2.

Logistics and transport development also remain high on the agenda, with both sides working to enhance Eurasian connectivity. This includes expanding cross-border road and rail infrastructure and aligning efforts on the eastern branch of the North-South international transport corridor. “The volume of multimodal freight transport, including transit, between Russia and Kazakhstan continues to grow steadily,” the government added.

The two countries are also boosting cooperation in education and cultural exchange. Over 60,000 Kazakh students are currently studying in Russia, and 800 government-funded scholarships have been allocated for Kazakh citizens for the 2025–2026 academic year.

A symbolic event is also on the horizon: “On May 28, the ‘Alley of Eternal Friendship between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan’ will be inaugurated in Astana,” the press service announced. In autumn 2025, Russia will host Kazakhstan’s Days of Culture.
