Next evacuation of Russian children from Syria is planned by the end of the year

18 November 2021

Work on the evacuation of Russian children from Syria continues, with the next group scheduled to be evacuated by the end of 2021, Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, told TASS on Wednesday.

"Work on the search for Russian children in refugee camps and their return home has not stopped. It is being carried out on the instructions of the President of Russia and will continue. Documents have been prepared for 140 children in Syria. We are making every effort to help them return to Russia as soon as possible. We hope to transport the next group by the end of the year", she explained.

The Children's Ombudsman specified that the exact number of children who will be in the next group is not known yet. She added that, taking into account the experience of previous years, we may be talking about a group of about 30 children.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mikhail Mizintsev, head of the Russian-Syrian Interagency Coordination Staff for the return of refugees, said that Russia continues to work for the return of Russian citizens in a difficult life situation, especially children, from the Al-Hawl refugee camp. In particular, according to his data, with the participation of Anna Kuznetsova, former presidential commissioner for children's rights (currently deputy speaker of the State Duma), who personally organized all this work, traveled directly to refugee camps and took Russian children back home, 215 children have now been returned.
