Niger's New Authorities Agree on Transition Plan Brokered by Togo

15 December 2023

The military authorities of Niger have agreed on a plan for the implementation of the transition period in the country, facilitated through the mediation of Togo. This development was reported by the state news portal Sahel.org following a meeting between Togo's Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, and the head of Niger's transitional government, Ali Lamine Zeine.

"We have successfully collaborated and reached an agreement on the transition plan in Niger," quoted the Togo's foreign minister. The minister further stated that the authorities of Niger, Togo, and Sierra Leone are set to finalize the details of the transition timetable in early January 2024.

On July 26, a faction of military officers from the presidential guard staged a mutiny in Niger, declaring the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum. The National Council for the Salvation of the Homeland, led by Guard Commander Abdurahmane Tchiani, was established to assume governance. On August 10, Tchiani issued a decree to establish a transitional government, as reported by ActuNiger. Subsequently, the leader of Niger's military regime clarified that the forthcoming transitional period in Niger "will not exceed three years."
